Homework #8

According to Hobbes, why would people want to live under the rule of an absolute monarch?
Answer: So that they would escape thier selfish and wicked lives.

What important documents reflect the influence of Enlightenment ideas?
Answer: The Bill of Rights.

In your opinion, what are the two most important ideas of the Enlightenment? Support your answers with reasons.
Answer: 1) Women's Equality- Women deserve to be equal,and don't deserve to be treated like objects in terms that they can't go to school,can't vote,etc.
               2) Abolishment of Torture- It's just not human to torture thier own species. Besides, what if the person was guilty for something that they did not commit.

  • Voltaire-A philosopher who wrote over 70 books about politics.
  • Montesquieu- A writer who studies political liberty. He is a lawyer and an aristocat.
  • Separation of Powers-The three powers(or branches):executive,legislative, or judicial.
  • Jean Jacques Rousseau-A philosopher passionate about individual freedom. He was an engraver,music teacher,tutor, and secretary. Believes that women's education is after men's.
  • Mary Wollstonecraft-A woman who disagreed with Rousseau's theory.

  • Galileo Galilei-A scientist who studied motin and discovered the law of the Pendulum.
  • Scientific Method-Logical procedure for testing and gathering information.
  • Francis Bacon-An english politician and writer who critizied medieval scholars.
  • Rene Descartes-A scientist who made analytical geometry,which linked algebra and geometry.
  • Isaac Newton-A scientist who figured that all physical objects are affected equally by the same force.

  • Lands that were inhabited were discovered and opened possibilities that there were so many truths to be discovered.
  • The geocentic theory troubled Copernicus, making him study the stars more.
